Stanford-South Africa Student Seminar Series

Stanford University, the University of the Western Cape, the University of Cape Town, and the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (South Africa) have formed a consortium to jointly support the Stanford-South Africa Biomedical Informatics Training Program (SSABMI).  The mission of the training program is to provide world-class education and research opportunities in biomedical informatics, leading to the next generation of interdisciplinary faculty and development of the field in South Africa.

The SSABMI is providing the opportunity for selected students to participate in a seminar series where they will be able to present their research to fellow students, both nationally and internationally.  The seminar series is focused on establishing communication channels between Stanford and South African students who have shown potential in driving the field of Biomedical Informatics in their institutions.  Participants will interact with each other on a regular basis, promoting their research and establishing collaborations for future research.

The first presentation will take place at the South African National Bioinformatics Institute, University of the Western Cape on Wednesday 5 April 2006 at 20h00 (Central African Time) / 10h00 (Pacific Time).  The interaction between Stanford and South African participants will take place via video-conferencing, where students have the opportunity to visually interact with each other.  Thereafter, presentations will be made every two weeks, alternating between a Stanford and South African presenter.

Students are encouraged to attend, as this is a great opportunity to meet people who share their vision of science and the quest for knowledge.
